Claire Venables

Claire is a figurative painter working in oils, painting from direct observation. She paints people, places and objects that have a story to tell, particularly those that tell us something about our relationships with the world around us. She is fascinated by how things gather meaning through use, memory and association, and how spaces retain traces of the people and stories that have shaped them.

Her paintings encourage us to look closer at the things that hold meaning in our lives. Through a process of painting, scraping back and revising, Claire seeks to capture the experience of seeing, gradually building an image through abstract shapes and subtle colour shifts. The quiet stillness and ethereal atmosphere of her paintings leave space for the viewer’s own memories and associations.

Claire spent many years living along the Thames in West London, a place she remains particularly fond of and which continues to inspire her. The river, and the history of the people, places and stories along its banks, have a special resonance in her work. She continues to live and work along the Thames, now from her studio in Oxford.

Her paintings have been exhibited at the Mall Galleries with the Royal Society of Oil Painters and the New English Art Club, as well as in exhibitions in London and Oxfordshire. In 2025 she was awarded the New English Art Club Scholarship. Her work is held in private collections in the UK and internationally.
